Systems for industrial automation PDF Print E-mail
The Production Division of the Department of Mechanical, Nuclear and Production Engineering carries out an intense research activity in the field of robotics applied to production processes, within projects supported by the University of Pisa, the Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research (MURST) and the National Research Council (CNR). The main scope consists of testing innovative solutions aimed to obtain advantages in terms of automation, competitiveness, productivity and reduction of time to market.
The research topics mainly concern the application of robotic systems to:
- Automated assembly process - use of sensors in robotized assembly, design and development of flexible assembly cells, etc.;
- Manipulation, loading and unloading problems in flexible manufacturing systems;
- Automated handling and inspection of leather plies in the tanning industry.
Another important topic in the field of industrial automation is artificial vision, developed at the Production Division since mid of the 80’s. The main fields are:
- Quality control (mechanical parts, natural materials);
- Robot operations (camera calibration, stereo vision, 3D localisation, tracking);
- Tool Condition Monitoring (TCM);
- On-line welding control.
The Industrial Vision Lab (IVL) is involved with local and national companies in research projects for the technological innovation and for the improvement of the quality of products and processes.
