The Production Division of the Department of Mechanical, Nuclear and Production Engineering has a long tradition of scientific activities in the field of manufacturing processes. With its equipments and its staff, it is able to face research themes and it is open for collaboration on that ground. In this regard, the monitoring of cutting processes through sensors and their interfacing with the numerical control of machine tools has a strategic role in the automation of manufacturing process. Some examples of activities carried out in this research area are: - Development of a system for on-line control of delamination phenomena in drilling of glass fiber reinforced plastics; - Development of a wear sensors for cutting tools, based on image-analysis techniques;- Development of a sensor integrated cutting tool for force monitoring in turning. The objective of this research is to obtain a low-cost system, easy to install and to use on machine tools. Another research theme of industrial interest is rapid prototyping. In this field, the Production Division is currently active in the application of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) techniques in manufacturing of sand shells for foundry industry. The production division is involved in tight connection with companies from the stone sector in research projects for the improvement of marble and granite manufacturing processes.
