Production process planning has a fundamental role in modern enterprises. Furthermore, with the introduction of governative regulations concerned about the environment, the planning of end-of-life products dismantling and recycling become more and more necessary.
The fields of activity of DIMNP in this area are described in the following points:
- Plant engineering and production planning: analysis and management of plant design with feasibility study and reliability analysis, FMECA applications and maintenance analysis; production management with particular emphasis for group technology, CIM, concurrent engineering, development of heuristic procedures to plan the working time of the machines; production systems simulation, cost analysis;
- Planning of manufacturing processes: computer-aided planning of machining operations, automated tool selection, robotized assembly planning both to determine the optimal assembly sequence and to detect the optimal grasps and grippers;
- Disassembly planning: this issue is focused on the innovative problem of the end-of-life products dismantling to allow the recover of their materials and components with the maximum profit.
The software tools used in the Department include both the more traditional ones and the more recent techniques of Artificial Intelligence, such as Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, Ant Systems, etc.
